The AMAs warning today that the private health insurance sector in Australia is on the precipice is yet another crisis call for urgent government action.
The AMAs President Tony Bartone, has confirmed that the Governments recent reforms on Private Health Insurance did not address the key issues of affordability and value for money.
This is despite the Minister claiming earlier this year hed accomplished the most significant reforms to private health insurance in over a decade.
The report highlights widely differing out-of-pocket costs by state, insurer, and scenario.
This Government is sitting on its hands when it comes to soaring private health premiums and record out of pocket costs and waiting times.
Last week in Senate Estimates, senior officials confirmed that private health insurance premiums have never been higher than they are under this Government.
The AMAs report card on PHI comes only 24 hours after calls from CHOICE for the Government to review Private Health Insurance after their updated analysis confirmed that consumers arent getting value for money when it comes to their health insurance.
Earlier this week the Private Health Industry called to privatise access to general practitioners and other services, which would be a dangerous step towards Americanising our health care system.
But this is yet another symptom of a government so devoid of agenda they are relying on big insurers to drive urgent policy reform.
The only way to address the private health insurance crisis is with a root and branch review of the system.
The time for a review into private health insurance is now.
