INTERNATIONAL PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS REMEMBRANCE DAY

15 October 2019

Today is a day of remembrance for pregnancy loss and infant death.

Pregnancy and infant loss is an eternal heartache for the thousands of Australian parents who lose their babies every year.

We acknowledge those parents and families who dont get to bring their babies home from hospital, and who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a baby shortly after birth.

And we honour the 106,000 thousand babies in Australia who lose their lives to miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death each year.

The scale of that tragedy must spur the nation into a concerted effort to reduce the rate of pregnancy and infant loss.

And that concerted effort must reduce those impacted by the higher rates of pregnancy loss and infant death; those who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and those in our remote communities.

Labor is committed to elevating the prominence and priority of reducing pregnancy and infant loss.

And today Labor pays tribute to those who are grieving silently for the babies they have lost.
